CATHERINE SHAW WEDDING DRESS DESIGNER

Catherine Shaw wedding dress designer at work

My love of making clothes began at an early age with my dolls, (all of which were dressed in the fashion of the day) and progressed to theatrical costume, specialising in Opera Costume at the ENO and Opera Australia. I have gained a wealth of knowledge over the past 25 years of vintage and modern cut through working with many theatrical designers and brides who are looking for something unique to them and I want to bring a special magic and sparkle to your Wedding Day or your special celebration. Dresses I have made have travelled as far as New Zealand, Tobago, Zanzibar and China as well as being ‘at home’ in London and the UK. I work from my beautiful studio in creative and cosmopolitan Crystal Palace, which is served well by mainline rail, bus and the new Overground network.

I absolutely love what I do and I hope it shows in the craftsmanship I pride myself on. Every dress is made to a high standard and hand finished perfectly. I hand make flowers and trim, making your dress a work of art for you to wear. Having a dress specially commissioned is an exciting and fun journey, when you can experiment with the way you want to look. Whether it’s your wedding day or for a special celebration we will arrive at the perfect dress. It isn’t necessary to know absolutely what you are looking for - many woman come to my studio with only a vague idea - I will help to turn that ‘idea’ into the dress of your dreams.

All my dresses are designed individually for each of you and prices start at £1400, corsets start at £500. It may be that you only require a small piece to be made and prices will be given accordingly. After our no obligation initial consultation, on your approval, I will draw up designs from our discussion. At this stage I will require a non refundable £250 design fee, which will be part of the overall fee if you choose to go ahead with the wedding dress. Once the designs are approved I will require 50% of the remaining fee. A ‘toile’ is then made of your dress out of calico, this will be fitted and altered to your specifications through my guidance. Once we are both happy with this process, the magic begins as your dress will be cut and made up in your chosen fabrics.

There are usually 4-5 fittings in all, each one revealing more of your ultimate dress and ideally I ask for a lead time of at least 6-9 months for your dress to be made, although a shorter making time can be accommodated if necessary. Half way through the making process a further instalment of 25% is made and the last payment will be required at the final dress fitting stage.

The finished result will be a bespoke wedding dress that is really a part of you and will be a joy to wear – a dress that has grown from your imagination into the Dress of Your Dreams.
